River Otter remains have been found as far back as 200 BC to the mid-1400s so they have been in existence for a very long time. They are expert swimmers and divers, swimming an average speed of seven miles per hour and staying underwater up to two minutes. The Otters webbed and clawed feet enable him in his swimming and in running. River Otters can run up to 15-18 miles per hour; they run and slide on ice, gliding as much as 25 feet. River Otters are found in Alaska, most of Canada, Pacific Northwest, the Great Lakes, along the Atlantic Coast and the Gulf of Mexico. They are now being re- introduced in Nebraska, New York and Indiana.
