The Lower Geyser Basin in Yellowstone National Park is scattered over a large area and features regularly-erupting geysers, hot springs and mud paint pots. The mud pots have small vents that continuously bubble through thick clayish mud of varying colors and consistencies. The mud pots contain only water from condensed steam or ground water and as this water becomes acidic, it breaks down the rocks and minerals to form the mud. When it rains the mud is soupy and as it dries the mud becomes thicker and thicker. |
