Oxbow Bend- Mount Moran Grand Tetons

Oxbow Bend is a bend or loop of the Snake River that has been cut off from the main channel. It resembles the oxbow used by the western pioneers. Mount Moran at 12,605 feet, seen in the west, is a flat-topped mountain with many ridges and glaciers. Though smaller in height than the Grand Teton, it is considered to be the most massive and second only to the Grand Teton in the entire Teton Range. It dominates the north section of the Teton Range. Unlike the other peaks that stand together Mount Moran appears to stand alone. Mount Moran was named for Thomas Moran the frontier landscape artist. In 1950 a plane from New Tribal Missions carrying women and children crashed on the north face of the mountain and left no survivors. The wreckage of the plane still remains on the mountain serving as the gravesite for those who perished.
