Train Depot in Liberty - NC

The Cape Fear and Yadkin Valley Railroad was organized in 1879 with the completion of their main line from Wilmington, North Carolina to Mt. Airy, North Carolina in 1890. Service on the first part of the line from Fayetteville, North Carolina to Greensboro, North Carolina was completed in 1884 and gave Randolph County their first railroad located in Staley. The depot in Staley not only served as a shipping terminal for the Deep River textile factories but also revived the small towns of Staley and Liberty. The Liberty Depot, built in1885, is an excellent example of a turn-of-the-century train depot with its hip-roof and both a gabled dormer and an octagonal turret. In 1992 The Norfolk Southern Railroad no longer needed the the Liberty Depot. The depot was offered to anyone who would pay to have it moved. Jim Wilson, an attorney in Liberty, had the depot moved and set up on the opposite side of the tract. In 2003 the depot was restored to its original color with an addition of a new metal roof.
