As you walk through the Bethel Cemetery you will see old slate and soap stone tombstones that mark the graves of five to six generations of families. Most of the present members are descendants of the original members. In the 1840’s, an epidemic spread through the community and a number of members died within thirty to forty hours of each other. The tombstones are crumbling with age, difficult to read and some information has completely disappeared with time. A number of graves do not have tombstones but are marked only by field stones. Soldiers from the Civil War, World l and World War ll are resting here. The oldest grave dates back to 1821, a young man who passed at the age of thirteen. |
