Fair Grove Methodist Church is located in southern Randolph County in Why Not, North Carolina. Organized around 1859, it was known as Mt. Moriah Church. The log church was constructed near the site of the historical Plank Road and was burned during the Civil War. In 1870 a new church was constructed and named Fair Grove because of its location in a grove of oak trees. Construction began on the present church building in 1900 and completed in 1902. Fair Grove served the Why Not Community until it was closed by the Methodist Conference in 1935.
In the sanctuary hangs an oil-burning brass chandelier that was used prior to the 1930’s when electricity became available in rural areas.
The Why Not Memorial Association, a volunteer association, was organized in 1936 and continues to maintain and preserve the church and grounds.
The first Sunday evening in December, the Fair Grove Church hosts “An Old Fashion Christmas Service” that is open to the public. |
