The North Carolina Zoo, located in Asheboro North Carolina, is nationally recognized as one of the nation’s finest zoos. It was the first American Zoo to be designed around the “natural habitat’ philosophy of presenting animals and plants in areas that would closely resemble their habitats in the wild. The North Carolina Zoo has a collection of about 1,100 specimens representing about 250 different species of mammals, reptiles, birds and insects. The African and North American exhibit areas have more then 500 acres with more than five miles of walkways, which make it the nation’s largest walk-through natural-habitat zoo. |
