Between Yemassee & Beaufort South Carolina, in Prince William Parrish, stand the beautiful ruins of the Old Sheldon Church. The Episcopal Church was built in 1745 and was one of the first Greek revival structures built in the United States. In 1779 during the Revolutionary War, the British burned Old Sheldon. In 1825 it was rebuilt only to be burned again by Sherman in 1865 on his march to the sea. This is the way it stands today. |
