The American Battlefield Protection Program promotes the preservation of significant historic battlefields associated with battles on American soil. This is a way for us to learn and understand about our past history and the people involved. These are some of the thirteen National Battlefields we have in the United States: Cowpens National Battlefield, where the decisive battle that helped turn the tide of the Revolutionary War in the South was fought, Wilson’s Creek National Battlefield, the site of the first major Civil War engagement west of the Mississippi River, Antietam National Battlefield, where the bloodiest one day battle in American History took place and Big Hole National Battlefield that is a memorial to those who fought and died in the Nez Perce war of 1877. |
