Pisgah Covered Bridge -- Asheboro - NC

The Pisgah Covered Bridge is one of the two remaining covered bridges in North Carolina. In the early 1900’s Randolph County had about 60 covered bridges which was about half of the total number of covered bridges in the Piedmont. In 1911 JJ Welch was hired by the county to construct the covered bridge across the West Fork of the Little River in the Pisgah Community and he did so for the cost of $40.00. In the 1950’s a new bridge was built but the covered bridge remained and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972. After years of neglect the bridge was in need of repair and in 1998 the North Carolina Zoo Society partnered with the N.C. Department of Transportation, The Piedmont Land Conservancy and the Land Trust for Central N.C. along with the residents of the Pisgah Community. Together they raised over $73,000.00 to refurbish the bridge. In 2003 a flash flood of the Little River destroyed the bridge but about ninety percent of the original materials were salvaged to restore the bridge once again. A walking trail and picnic tables have been added and it is open to the public. The Pisgah Covered Bridge appeared as “Blaire’s Bridge” in the filming of the movie based on the novel Blaire’s Bridge. The other remaining covered bridge is the Bunker Hill Covered Bridge in Catawba County, NC.
