The linage of the English Pointer is very interesting. According to history and information, the Pointer was developed about two centuries ago by crossing the Italian Pointer, the Foxhound, the Bloodhound, the Greyhound, the Newfoundland, the Setter and the Bulldog. The modern English Pointer has existed for only about eighty years. The English Pointer was named for the motionless stance he assumes once he has found game. The direction of the point tells the hunter where the game is hiding. The first recorded mention of the Pointer was in England around 1650, when the dog was used to find hare for the Greyhound to hunt. The English Pointer is renowned for his tracking and pointing skills as well as his scenting prowess. |
