Congaree National Swamp Monument

The Congaree National Swamp Monument protects over 22,000 acres of floodplain, forest, swamp and adjacent uplands along the Congaree River in Richland County just southeast of Columbia, South Carolina. It is the largest remnant of old growth floodplain remaining on the continent. It has 90 species of trees and the variety equals half of the number found in all of Europe. The 169 foot Loblolly Pine is the largest in the United States. The Congaree National Swamp has been given the distinction of being named: Natural National Landmark, International Biosphere Reserve, Wildness Area, Globally Important Bird Area and National Park.
