San Jose De Garcia Mission Church

Traveling the scenic “High Road” to Taos, you pass through the small village of Las Trampas New Mexico.  In 1751 twelve families from Santa Fe led by Juan de Arguello, who had received a land grant from Governor Thomas Velez Cachupin, established Las Trampas, a Spanish Colonial Village located in the beautiful mountain valley south of Taos.  The San Jose De Garcia Mission church was built on the site of the original town plaza in 1760.  San Jose De Garcia is considered to be one of the best preserved examples of Spanish Colonial architecture in New Mexico.  The National Park Service made Las Trampas a National Historic District in 1967 and the church was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1970.  San Jose De Garcia continues to be an active parish and was fully restored in the 1970’s.
