This amazing bridge in Fayette County West Virginia, part of the New River Gorge National River, was opened October 22nd 1977 and has become the symbol of West Virginia. It is 3,030 feet long, 876 feet high, 70 feet wide which makes it the highest steel arch bridge east of the Mississippi River and the second largest in the world. The third Saturday in October is Official Bridge Day, the states largest one day festival. The bridge is closed to traffic and visitors can walk onto the bridge and experience the breathtaking views of the New River Gorge. You can watch parachutists jump from the center of the bridge, rappellers doing 700 feet rappels from the bridge and you can also have the opportunity to do 600 feet ziplines off the bridge. (I don’t think so!) You can explore the New River Gorge area by bike, hiking the trails or taking the Fayette Station Road Auto Tour. A spur of the National Coal Heritage Trail, this narrow hundred year - old road of hairpin curves, is a 7 ½ mile loop that winds down to the bottom of the New River Gorge crosses a small bridge and winds up the other side. At the bottom, you can walk onto the Fayette Station Bridge that crosses the New River, and view the New River Gorge Bridge.
